CHAPTER – 3      The Malefactor

Q.1. Summaries the story to express the feeling it aroused in you.      Or

  2. What lesson do you draw from the story “The Malefactor “?

Ans. The tiny extraordinarily skinny peasant , wearing patched drawers and a shirt of striped linen , stood facing  the investigating magistrate .his hairy face was pitted with small pox, and his eyes scarcely visible under thick over changing brows .he is the central character of the story ‘The  Malefactor ‘. His name is Denis Grigoryev .

Denis Grigoryev was accused of having removed a nut from the railway line . it was taken as an act of  sabot age and he was  caught red handed by the linesman . the poor peasants would use such nuts as sinkers to keep their fishing nets below the surface of water to attract the fish to the bait .the peasant inspite of all his innocent pleading as not guilty of any crime was put in jail .The story has humorous and sparkling dialogues between the magistrate and the poor peasant, who went on defending his innocence without trying to understand the gravity of his Offence .

At the end of the story when Denis is sent to prison by the Magistrate, one has a sickening feeling of remorse. One is prone to think that in this wicked, ruthless, calculative world it is a sin to be innocent and simple hearted like Denis Grigoryev.

Q.2.Denis before the magistrate justifies it.

Ans. He says, “Oh God forbid your Honour! No! Why should I kill anybody? Do you think we are criminals of heathen eh? Ah, good gentlemen, we thank God we have lived our lives without ever letting such an idea as killing people enter our heads!”

CHAPTER – 4           AN ASTROLOGER’S DAY

Q.1. Summarise the story ‘An Astrologer’s Day‘.

Ans. The story revolves round an astrologer who foretells the fate of the people just by using the practical knowledge .continuous practice had sharpened his perception. Earlier, he had tried to kill his friend, guru nayak in his village and had left the village to escape the arrest. Fortunately, his friend had not died and after a long time he happened before the astrologer but could not recognize him.

However, the astrologer recognized him but did not disclosed his identification. He is very cleverly misled Guru Nayak by advising him not to travel southward again  and thus got  rid of him forever.

Q .2. Give the character sketch of the astrologer .

Ans. The astrologer used to sit on a busy road side .he used to go there daily at mid-day. He took his professional equipment in his bag. It comprised of a dozen cowrie shells a square piece of cloth with mystic charts on it , a notebook and a bundle of  palmyra writing .he painted his forehead with sacred ash and vermilion. He had dark whiskers and beard and he wound a saffron coloured turban around his head .he had sharp gleaming eyes. . The Colour scheme of his dress and appearance was so affective that a big crowd of people was attracted him .he was as much ignorant about the knowledge of stars as were his clients .he said things  which pleased and astonished them.              He possessed enough idea of a man’s troubles, marriage, money and other complications of human relations. He charged three pies for every question and did not speak till the client had spoken for at least ten minutes which gave him  enough material to answer to answer many  question .he said such things which endeared him to his client immediately.
