FIGURES OF SPEECH
A Figure of speech is used in a language to produce a greater effect on the reader or the listener. when we use it , the ordinary ideas become extraordinary resultantly the beauty of the language increases manifold. Wren and Martin define a figure of speech as a departure from the ordinary from of expression or the ordinary course of ideas in order to produce a greater effect. Nesfield states, ” A figure of Speech is a deviation from the ordinary use of words with a view to increase their effect.”
The main figures of Speech are :
- Simile
- Metaphor
- Personification
- Apostrophe
- Oxymoron
- Onomatopoeia
- Hyperbole
- Alliteration
- Antithesis
Simile : –
When there is a comparison of at least one common point between two objects , the figure of speech is called ‘simile’ . It is introduced by such words as ‘like’, ‘as’ , ‘as…..as’ , ‘so’ , or ‘so as’ etc.
However , a comparison of two things of the same kind cannot be called a simile.
For Example- 1. Life is like a dream.
2. She is as beautiful as a rose.
3.Her words are sweet like honey.
Metaphor : –
A Metaphor is a figure of speech in which two things are treated as one while comparing them . The words like ‘as’, ‘like’ , ‘so’ , ‘so…….as’ etc. are not used in a metaphor.
For Example : –
1.Life is not a bed of roses.
2. The news you brought is a dagger to my heart .
3. whose armour is his honest thought?
4. He is a vulture of the state.
5. Life is but a walking shadow.
6. I see a lily on thy brow.
7. He is the star of the family.
Personification : –
A Personification is a figure of speech in which lifeless objects or abstract ideas are spoken of as having life and mind .
For Example : –
- Experience is the best teacher .
- Love is blind.
- Death lays his icy hands on kings.
- Let not ambition not mock their useful toil .
- I am the daughter of earth and water.
- Time and tide waits for none.
